“Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story”. – Josh Shipp
Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child released a study in 2015 saying, “Every child who winds up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult.”
A few years ago, a young woman named Danielle came to the Bridge inquiring about programs. New to the neighborhood, she needed support as a single mom with two children and a little one on the way. Her kids Darrell (“DJ”, 5th grade) and Ayianna (“Yaya”, 3rd grade) jumped right into all of the programs for their age groups. They have excelled while working closely with loving, caring adults every week (4 days) at the Bridge.
DJ struggled to control his emotions and respond appropriately in certain situations. In 2017 his choices and behaviors in school led to 16 disciplinary infractions and over 7 suspensions. While at the Bridge, DJ experienced conflicts with other students causing staff to intervene. Love, compassion, and patient support from caring adults in a structured environment empowered DJ to understand how to control his emotions and be accountable for his actions. DJ experienced Christ’s love for him.
The Bridge witnesses success stories often, and DJ is one of many. Today, DJ processes his thoughts and expresses himself appropriately. He works hard. This school year, DJ currently has 0 infractions or suspensions. His teacher writes “Darrell has made tremendous growth in all academic areas and has matured socially, and his attitude toward his schoolwork is better. Darrell takes great pride being a Safety Patrol member here at Caln Elementary School.”
Danielle trusts the Bridge to walk alongside her as she raises her children. Your financial support provides opportunities for students like DJ and YaYa to grow to their full potential in a loving, Gospel-centered community.
